New Secretary
of State
A Friend to Tibet
~~ICT
Hillary
Rodham Clinton
brings more experience on
the Tibet issue, both professional and personal, than any
previous Secretary of State. During her years as First Lady
and as Senator, Hillary Rodham Clinton has been outspoken
against the repression on Tibetans by Chinese authorities
and has advocated for a negotiated solution for Tibet.
Secretary Clinton issued a strong statement condemning the
brutal Chinese response to the March 2008 uprisings, and
urged former President Bush not to attend the opening
ceremonies of the Beijing Olympics because of the crackdown
in Tibet. Clinton has met the Dalai Lama on many occasions,
and co-sponsored the resolution to award him the
Congressional Gold Medal. She also co-sponsored the Tibetan
Policy Act, which codified the position of Special
Coordinator for Tibetan Issues within the State Department.
Clinton takes over the State Department at a critical time
for the Tibet issue, as Tibetans in exile have recommitted
themselves to peacefully seeking a negotiated solution on
genuine autonomy for Tibet.
